HMS Daring is the lead ship of the Type-45 class. She was launched in 2006 and entered service on July 23, 2009. The Type 45 class serves the fleet as a guided-missile destroyer – primarily providing air defense from incoming threats such as aircraft or cruise missiles. As such, HMS Daring is comparable in mission scope and reach to the United States Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers, capable of engaging all manner of surface and aerial threats as required. Type 45 has a displacement of approximately 8,500 tons, a length of 152.4 m, a beam of 21.2 m, a draft of 7.4 m. It is powered by two Rolls-Royce WR-21 gas turbines, with 28,800 hp each, and two Wärtsilä 12V200 diesel generators, with 2,700 hp each. The ship can reach a maximum speed of 32 knots, and has a range of 7,000 nautical miles at 18 kn. Standard crew is 191 people.

The design of the Type 45 brings new levels of radar signature reduction to the Royal Navy. Deck equipment and life rafts are concealed behind the ship’s superstructure panels, producing a very “clean” superstructure, somewhat similar to that of the French La Fayette-class frigates. The mast is also sparingly equipped externally. Speculation by the press suggests that this design gives the ship the radar cross-section of a small fishing boat.

The bridge superstructure is of a low-profile design with the bridge proper identified by its row of rectangular windows. The superstructure is slab-sided and well-contoured to the hull while the main mast is enclosed and of a pyramidal design reaching far above the bridge area. Atop the structure is a Sampson surveillance and fire control radome. Lower along the mast sides are sponsons containing smaller SATCOM domes. The stern is taken up by a helicopter flight deck which receives a full-service hangar as part of the aft superstructure. Type 45 can carry 2 Lynx helicopters armed with Sea Skua anti-ship missiles or 1 Merlin helicopter equipped with anti-submarine torpedoes.

The Type 45 destroyers are primarily designed for anti-air ωɑɾʄɑɾε with the capability to defend against targets such as fighter aircraft and drones as well as highly maneuverable sea skimming anti-ship missiles travelling at supersonic speeds. The Type 45 destroyer is equipped with the Sea Viper air-defence system, utilising the SAMPSON active electronically scanned array multi-function radar and the S1850M long-range radar.

PAAMS is able to track over 2,000 targets and simultaneously control and coordinate multiple missiles in the air at once, allowing a large number of tracks to be intercepted and destroyed at any given time. The missiles used for PAAMS are the Aster 15 and the Aster 30. The Type 45 carries Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles by a 48-cell Sylver A50 Vertical Launching System. The Aster missile carries an inertial computer with datalink, an active J-band Doppler radar seeker and 15kg warhead.

Two Harpoon anti-ship quad-launchers are featured to combat enemy surface vessels. The ships are fitted with the 114mm mk8 mod 1 medium-calibre gun system for shore bombardment and two 30mm guns, 2 x Phalanx Close-In ധҽąքօղ Systems and 2 x Miniguns. The vessels are also outfitted with 6 x 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Guns.
